July Yogi of the Month

Congratulations to Gregory Keltgen our July Yogi of The Month! Here's what he has to say about his yoga practice.

I've been into physical fitness most my life, but I recently made yoga my priority after going through a very difficult time.  Initially I wasn't sold, but as I kept going, thankfully, I came to love and embrace the Vinyasa style. I feel it encompasses what I enjoy about cardiovascular workouts, strength training and well, yoga. It's been such a positive life changing choice to partake in this. It makes me feel good, look good and it's helped develop my mental discipline and stamina.  Needless to say I recommend this to anyone, I literally do, and I specifically love coming here, the teachers are great the people are friendly and the place is clean. It's one of the best decisions I've made.

Thanks Gregory for sharing your experience with us. We love the positive energy you bring in to the studio and are so happy to have you as part of our community!

June Yogi of The Month

Congratulations to Judy Knurr our June Yogi of The Month! Here's what Judy has to say about her practice.

My yoga journey began in 1971.  In a small room in a church across from UWM, I learned the techniques of Hatha Yoga following the teachings of H. H. Sri Swami Rama as taught by my first instructor.  From that time on, yoga has always been a part of my life, however; in 2006 I began to practice on a regular basis, attending class or doing a home practice 2-3 times a week.  As I continued practicing, I became aware of the benefits of yoga both on and off the mat. I have been fortunate to practice with many teachers and fellow yogis at a variety of studios and outdoor locations.

Yinyasa flow has become my most frequent and favorite style of practice.  At Milwaukee Power Yoga I have felt the benefits of combining the challenging sequences combined with heat to experience a powerful physical workout as well as a restorative mental and emotional balance. Every class offers an opportunity to challenge oneself in a safe environment designed to push one’s limits yet feel success at the same time.

The studio offers a calm and welcoming atmosphere where yogis of all levels and experience can enjoy and benefit from an hour of mind-body connection and taking what it is that is needed to meet the challenges of life off the mat and leaving behind anything that is no longer needed. I suggest to yogis, experienced or first-timers, to treat yourself to the experience of a hot yoga class at Milwaukee Power Yoga and delight in the benefits your body and spirit will experience.  As I turn 63 this year, I am thankful for my yoga practice, the amazing teachers and fellow yogis I learn from daily and look forward to many more years of hot yoga at MPY. ~Namaste

Thanks Judy for sharing your experience with us. We are inspired by your life-long yoga practice and love having you as a student at

May Yogi of The Month

Congratulations to Allison Couillard, our May Yogi of The Month! Here's what Allison has to say about her practice.
I have tried several styles of yoga since starting my practice almost ten years ago, but none of them made me feel as strong as the vinyasa flow at Milwaukee Power Yoga.  Since making it a habit to get on my mat on a regular basis, I have noticed so many benefits.  Being an impatient person, I constantly think about what is ahead, but now I am more patient and I have my yoga practice to thank.  During class I try to focus on the pose I am doing, not what is coming next.  When I’m in a challenging balance pose like Warrior Three, I concentrate on calming my breath even though I feel like I’m going to fall.  This has translated to other areas of my life and I notice myself keeping calm during stressful situations at work and in life.  In the short year I have been practicing at Milwaukee Power Yoga, I have grown much as a yogi.  I had never tried any arm balances or inversions before, but the instructors are so encouraging that I am now at ease trying poses that take me out of my comfort zone.  Every class is challenging yet restorative and I always leave feeling relaxed.  I am so grateful to have found Milwaukee Power Yoga, a studio that has helped me finally discover a style of yoga that I truly love.

Thanks Allison for sharing your experience with us. We love to hear about the ways yoga has inspired your life both on and off the mat!

April Yogi of The Month

Congratulations to Salma Abadin, our April Yogi of The Month! Here's what Salma has to say about her yoga journey.
I cannot emphasize enough how much practicing yoga, especially at Milwaukee Power Yoga, has benefited me. I took my first yoga class in college and immediately fell in love with the restorative and calming qualities of yoga. I set my practice aside after graduating but thankfully rekindled my interest in yoga in January at MPY. I have explored a few types of yoga but I feel that I have found my niche in Vinyasa flow. I find myself being constantly challenged both mentally and physically on my mat. My body is telling to me fall over during one of Marci's classes when I am in high lunge for what seems like the 10th time or when I have sweat more than I thought was humanly possible after Laura's flow sequences, but now even after only a few months of practice I can overcome this feeling and persevere. Hot vinyasa flow yoga has allowed me to build stamina, endurance, strength, and focus—all things that improve many other aspects of my life. It seems incomprehensible to me now to not regularly get on my yoga mat and I have the teachers at Milwaukee Power Yoga to thank for that. They have created an atmosphere that is welcoming and filled with positive energy. Coming to yoga is the bright spot of my day and I am always excited to see where my practice takes me next.

Thanks Salma for sharing your experience with us.
Your dedication to your practice truly inspires us and we are grateful to have you at Milwaukee Power Yoga!

Milwaukee Power Yoga's March Yogi of the Month

Congratulations with Mike Gerard, our March Yogi of The Month! Here's what Mike has to say about his practice.

I do hot power yoga simply because it feels great to work every major muscle group and it combines strength, stretch, balance with cardio--plus I like to sweat. Over the last two years I experienced almost every running-related injury trying to lower my marathon PR time and eventually I burned out. My better half had been encouraging me to try yoga for about a year but I could not see how turning myself into a pretzel would help me qualify for the Boston Marathon. Although my shoulders and hamstrings have the elasticity of piano wire, and my tree pose can look like I'm failing a road-side sobriety test, I really enjoy the physical challenge of a tough class as much as any long run. As I gradually get back into running I plan to keep power yoga central to my training and recommend it to anybody training for a marathon--or anyone who appreciates hops and barley.

Thanks Mike for sharing your experience with us. We love the enthusiasm you bring to the mat and are so happy to have you as a student at Milwaukee Power!

February Yogi of The Month

Meet Kayti Johnson: February Yogi of The Month

Congratulations with Kayti Johnson, our February Yogi of The Month! Here's what Kayti has to say about her yoga journey.

Well, I began my practice in September of 2011 at UWM with the wonderful, Susan Goulet, who taught me so much.  I’ve continued with yoga classes this year at UWM with Leigh Anna Kelley, who is also wonderful. However, when winter break came along, I needed a yoga studio to go to because we didn’t have classes. That’s when I discovered Milwaukee Power Yoga and my absolute love for it.

Yoga to me is not necessarily an escape from reality, but more a time to set aside all other things besides my mat and I, a time to relax and let go. What I love so much about yoga is the constant discovery of myself. When I’m  on my mat I feel not only determination and possibility, but also, awareness and acceptance of wherever I am that day. Yoga keeps me motivated mentally and physically. I love that there is always more to learn and more to try. I don’t ever see myself quitting yoga. It’s pleasantly woven into my lifestyle, and continues to be something I look forward to everyday.

I highly recommend Milwaukee Power Yoga to anyone looking to begin or continue his or her yoga practice (and I’m not just saying this for Facebook, I literally try to recruit everybody I know.) Starting my first class at MPY, I feared judgment and intimidation from others. I felt none of the two. Everybody is social and friendly, which makes MPY an extremely enjoyable place to practice. Between the lovely, welcoming instructors, intimate studio space, and stimulating music, Milwaukee Power Yoga is really the place to be.

Thanks Kayti for sharing your story with us. We love the passion and excitement you have for yoga and it really shows in your practice. Milwaukee Power Yoga is so happy to have you as part of our community!

January Yogi Of The Month

Congratulations to Ian Baxter, our January Yogi of the Month! Here is what he has to say about his yoga journey.

When I signed up for my first class at Milwaukee Power Yoga, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I started my yoga journey 10 years prior, yet oddly enough, I had never taken a single yoga class. I first discovered yoga after curiosity led me to pick up a Rodney Yee DVD on a whim. I was immediately hooked, and yoga became an integral part of my life – helping to keep me mentally and physically fit.

When Milwaukee Power Yoga first opened, I looked it up and I saw that it was a hot yoga studio. I never thought I did well in the heat, so I was hesitant to sign up for a class. But after a few months, I finally gave it a go and I was amazed. Any misconceptions quickly fell away, and when I left class I felt revitalized and ready to take on the day with a fresh perspective. I knew I’d be back for more.

I’d recommend Milwaukee Power Yoga to both beginners and advanced yogis alike. The combination of a challenging practice, the cleansing feeling of sweat inducing heat, the welcoming–and non-competitive–environment, and inspiring teachers truly make this studio a special place. Perhaps the best aspect of practicing regularly is that for at least an hour of each day, your mind is focused and stressful thoughts fade away. All of this while you strengthen and tone your body. That being said, since taking first my first class at Milwaukee Power Yoga, my only regret is that I didn't start sooner!

Thanks Ian for sharing your practice with us. We love the positive energy you bring in to the studio and are so happy to have you as part of our community!
